WEST BAY — For the first time, a non-stop flight departing from the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport landed at the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport Sunday afternoon.
"We are excited to celebrate expanded service with Southwest Airlines to a brand new destination," said John Wheat, airport executive director. "These flights represent the beginning of fun travel opportunities for residents of our region and the St. Louis area as well."
Southwest Airlines' celebrated the new, daily, non-stop flights by greeting passengers of Southwest 114 with gift bags filled with travel brochures for local attractions, beach balls, lip balm and sun screen.
"All of this stuff will come in handy," said Jamie Gross, a passenger of Southwest 114. "We'll be spending most of our time on the beach."
Prior to Sunday's flights in and out of the airport, travelers would have to fly to Atlanta in order to catch a flight and tourists from the Midwest would have to fly in to surrounding area airports. Now visitors can be in Bay County after a scheduled flight time of around 1 hour and 45 minutes.
"This opens up the Midwest market with non-stop service from St. Louis," said Parker McClellan, deputy executive director of Beaches International Airport. "For all of the members of our communities this is a very good thing."
The acquisition of St. Louis as a direct connector to West Bay now brings it up to five non-stop services in the country. Baltimore, Nashville, Houston and Orlando.
For now, the flight routes will be seasonal.
Southwest will offer one non-stop flight a day to and from St. Louis seven days a week from June 3 to August 11 on a Boeing 737 aircraft. Southwest 114 was the first flight to arrive from St. Louis. The first flight departing from Panama City Beach was Southwest 144 and passengers also received gift bags with information about St. Louis.
